Grimoire - Fragrance
A convincing recreation of old books, built from aged paper, worn leather and dry woods.
The scent & the details
Every perfumer eventually tries to bottle the smell of old books.
I've been trying for nine years.
Grimoire began as the very first sketch in my Fumery work notebook: aged pages, dry bindings, old wood, and that strange sweetness that develops as a book slowly surrenders itself to time. I've collected and tested versions of that idea ever since, but none of them smelled quite like the thing I was chasing.
This year, it finally worked.
Built around aged paper, worn leather, and dry woods, Grimoire uses a lignin-to-vanillin transition accord to recreate the subtle transformation responsible for part of the unmistakable scent of an aging book. The result is papery, woody, softly sweet, and deeply atmospheric without becoming another generic "old library" fragrance.
The word grimoire shares its history with grammar: a system of instruction, rules, and technical knowledge. Before it became synonymous with books of magic, it represented the learned process behind extraordinary results.
That felt appropriate.
Perfumery has its own grammar. Materials, proportions, structure, transformation. Get them right, and something happens that none of the individual pieces can accomplish alone.
After nine years of practice, Grimoire is the working that finally worked.
